Blackberry is set to return to European and American markets by mid 2021 according to a statement released today.

The mobile phones will be 5G-enabled and will also feature a physical QWERTY keyboard.

Blackberry once dominated the smartphone market some years ago until it faced a decline resulting in a fall of its market share to a value below 1% in 2013.

However, Blackberry has announced a comeback after signing a licensing partnership with Onward Mobility and FIH Mobile Limited.

OnwardMobility will oversee product planning and market development, while FIH Mobile will design and manufacture the new phones.

Speaking on the upcoming release, John Chen, Chief Executive Officer of Blackberry stated that, “BlackBerry is thrilled OnwardMobility will deliver a BlackBerry 5G smartphone device with a physical keyboard leveraging our high standards of trust and security synonymous with our brand.

“ We are excited that customers will experience the enterprise and government level security and mobile productivity the new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will offer”.

Earlier this year, Blackberry parted ways with Chinese multinational electronics company, TCL, after their four-year agreement came to an end.

TCL’s role as the former manufacturer of Blackberry devices is due to take effect from the 31st of August 2020.
