Egyptian Fitness Startup Produces Protective Gear For Frontline Health Workers Combating COVID-19

Aug. 25, 2020, 2 p.m.

Sigma Fit, a Cairo-based fitness startup has recently produced protective gear for frontline health workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

The startup is a company that uses hydrophobic technology to design sportswear that can be repeatedly worn for weeks without washing.

The advent of COVID19 however compelled the team to create protective clothing using the same technology.

The clothing retains maximum protection against the virus for up to 30 washes, making them reusable.

Commenting on the outfits, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Omar El-Monayar, explained that, “these have replaced the disposable ones which are more expensive, less protective and environmentally unfriendly”.

“The suit has nanotechnology to repel the liquids, while its permeability is less than one micron, so the virus cannot penetrate it. We did a lot of testing and obtained certifications from the government that it provides enhanced protection.”

Omar further noted that the disposable protective costs 50 Egyptian pounds ($3.10), while the Sigma Fit’s reusable ones costs 250 pounds and can be used for up to 30 times if sprayed with alcohol.

Sigma Fit has also produced nano masks which were available for public purchase in Egypt in early June.

“We need to manufacture a mask that is cheap, stylish and comfortable. We want to create a fashion culture so that if people love the product, they will be more likely to wear it and protect themselves,” Omar further stated.

“Masks are probably going to be required for years. [Ours] are liquid-repellent, and the fabric density is international-grade. On the inside, they are made from a sports polycotton that can absorb all your sweat.”

Owing to its medical-grade material, the face mask cannot be penetrated by the virus according to Omar: “even if the virus were able to penetrate the mask, there’s another fabric layer on the inside to stop it. Tests have shown we can achieve a 98% infection prevention rate.”

At the moment, Sigma Fit has delivered 10,000 protective gear to hospitals across Egypt. Apart from Egypt, Sigma Fit has extended its operations to Kuwait and the United States America.
