Starting from October 2020, users of new Oculus headsets will now need to log in with their Facebook accounts before they will be able to use the device.

Oculus, the Facebook-owned virtual reality and software company, announced this on Wednesday on its official website.

Existing users however have the option to either merge their Facebook and Oculus accounts or maintain their existing accounts till 1st January 2023 after which support of the account will end.

Older headsets will still work though some apps and games will stop working.

Apart from that, all future unreleased Oculus devices will also require a Facebook login before they can be used.

The company says that the change will make it “easier to find, connect, and play with friends in VR”, adding that the Facebook requirement will make using an Oculus more like using Facebook

Oculus also pointed out that the new policy will be used to improve user experience by developing new services based on the majority of user preferences: “when you log into Oculus using your Facebook account, Facebook will use information related to your use of VR and other Facebook products to provide and improve your experience’’.

This information is also used to show you personalized content, including ads. For example, we might show you recommendations for Oculus Events you might like, ads about Facebook apps and technologies, or ads from developers for their VR apps.”
