Ghana's Ministry of Communication has launched the country’s first-ever Child Online Protection Reporting Portal (COP).

The portal was launched by the Deputy Minister for Communication, Alexander K.K Abban who represented the Minister of Communication Ursula Owusu Ekuful at the event.

The launch took place on Thursday, during the outdooring of this year’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month at the Accra Digital Centre.

The COP will supplement the Point of Contact platform, which was launched last year to facilitate the reporting of cybercrime and cybersecurity incidents in Ghana.

According to the Deputy Minister, the Point of Contact platform recorded a total of 11,525 reports on cybersecurity issues between January and August 2020.

He stated that the issues ranged from website defamation, cyber fraud, sextortion, malware attacks and online impersonation.

Speaking during the launch of the COP, the Minister explained that, ‘Children and young people make up a significant percentage of internet users. The utilization of the internet has led to children and young people becoming more and more threatened by sexual abuse materials”.

The Reporting Portal will be used to receive reports of CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) available on the internet. This can enable reporting of cases to the appropriate organizations such as Facebook to ensure that the images are taken down”, he added.

Mr. Abban stated that his Ministry in collaboration with the National Cybersecurity Centre, has also revised the National Child Online Protection Framework which has improved the fight against child-related online safety issues.

Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Minister for Gender, Children commended the introduction of the portal as a move to strengthen the child online protection system as well as “ protecting the rights of children”.
