An official said that Tanzania's state-run telecommunications firm had hoisted high-speed internet connectivity on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, through the national broadband project.

‘Today, I am launching high-speed internet communications up on Mount Kilimanjaro. Tourists can now communicate worldwide from the summit of the mountain,’ said Nape Nnauye, the Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology.

Hoisting the high-speed internet connection at Horombo hut campsite located 3,720 meters above sea level, Nnauye said the internet connectivity of the mountain, also dubbed as Africa’s rooftop, has been done by state-run Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation Limited (TTCL) through the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) project.

The NICTBB project intends to enhance the usage of ICT applications in Tanzania for sustainable socio-economic development, including implementing e-government, e-learning, e-health, e-commerce, and much more locally and globally.

He said internet connectivity on the mountain was expected to reach its highest peak, Uhuru peak, at 5,895 meters above sea level in October.

Mount Kilimanjaro, one of Tanzania’s leading tourist destinations, attracts roughly 50,000 trekkers from around the world who attempt to reach the mountain's summit annually.
