Google’s video streaming platform, YouTube will quit sending notifications to channel subscribers who upload new content starting from August 13, 2020.

However, YouTube said that the change would not affect ‘important emails’ such as changes to your account, service announcements and many others.

Speaking on the new change, YouTube said, “If you’re opted in to get emails about new uploads, live streams, and premieres from channels you’re subscribed to, these emails are going away, though you’ll still get notified on mobile via the YouTube app, or on desktop via your Chrome browser if you’ve turned these notifications on.”

According to YouTube’s internal data, less than 0.1% of these emails are ever opened, while users have also complained that such notifications add up to their already inboxes.

Given the low open rates, YouTube predicts that the impact of this change on your view rates will be zero:

“We didn’t see any impact to watch time when we experimented with turning off these emails. In fact, our tests showed that when we don’t send these emails, more people engage with mobile push notifications and their Subscriptions feed,” YouTube further stated.

This comes after YouTube got support for the ‘smart replies’ feature. The feature was rolled out to creators to suggest what they should write back to those who comment on their videos.

Pointing out how smart replies work differently for YouTube than for emails, the blog said, “In comparison to emails, which tend to be long and dominated by formal language, YouTube comments reveal complex patterns of language switching, abbreviated words, slang, inconsistent usage of punctuation, and heavy utilization of emoji.”

Aside from adding the feature to the standard YouTube platform, ‘smart replies’ feature has been rolled out to YouTube Studio platform too.
