APPLE: All You Need To Know About The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus Launch
Sept. 7, 2022, 7:17 p.m.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 in two sizes(iphone 14 and iphone 14 plus) at a press event today. They have a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display, respectively, with sharp aluminum edges, rounded corners, a glass back, a notch at the top of the device, and a Lightning port.
“iPhone 14 also has an updated internal design that improves thermal performance,” VP of iPhone Product Marketing Kaiann Drance said. For instance, you can play games for longer sessions.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 plus use the A16 Bionic system, and it packs more transistors and components specially designed to accelerate AI and other tasks across smartphone apps and iOS. Apple says that the A16 Bionic has a multi-core processor with six high-performance and two efficiency cores, a powerful GPU, and a 16-core neural engine for accelerating machine learning workloads.
Another spec of the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is its camera upgrade. The phones get a new 12-megapixel camera with a larger sensor and an f/1.5 aperture. The larger aperture helps take photos of fast-moving subjects, and the company claims a 49% improvement in low-light capturing. It also packs an ultra-wide camera that lets you take pictures from a new perspective, getting more of the landscape in the frame. The wide-angle camera also comes in handy for its new image stabilization toys, which means that you can now record video while running at full tilt.
The front camera is also new and introduces autofocus, making it easier to get you in focus.

“It uses the powerful neural engine to combine multiple frames into a single image. This delivers extraordinary detail and preserves even the subtlest textures in these mid to lower-light environments,” a spokesperson for Apple said at today’s event. “Now, we are taking our image pipeline further by applying deep fusion much earlier in the process on uncompressed images. This retains much more information in detail and enables the rendering of more colors and brighter colors. This new process unlocks our biggest step forward, yet we call it a photonic engine for low light performance.” There’s a new TrueDepth camera on the front with a faster f/1.9 aperture. The selfie camera also has autofocus for the first time, which should help keep faces sharp.
With the new Apple iPhone 14, Apple introduces its ‘always on’ display. Dropping the screen's refresh rate to once per second and a super-low-power mode means the screen can show you the most important info at your fingertips without dramatically losing your battery life.
In the U.S., Apple is dropping the SIM tray. Instead, customers will have to switch to eSIM⸺, a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without using a physical nano-SIM. Apple said explicitly that this is a change for customers in the U.S. International iPhone models should still have a SIM tray. Apple explained the benefits of eSIM, such as more privacy – since there’s no physical SIM to be removed – alongside the possibility to add several numbers digitally.
The iPhone 14 has new sensors that can detect a car crash. It can help you call emergency services more quickly. And if you’re in the middle of nowhere and don’t have Wi-Fi or cell service, the iPhone can still help you with emergency SOS via satellite. You can send a message to emergency services if you’re outside with a clear sky view.
The iPhone 14 will start at $799, while the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899. Pre-orders begin on September 9th; the iPhone 14 will be available on September 16th, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be available on October 7th.
