Sony to Invest $250 Million in Epic Games for Minority Stake

Sony, a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation, will invest $250 million in Epic Games for a minority stake. The investment has been by a subsidiary of Sony and was announced by both companies.

The development was announced through a press release on the Sony Website and disclosed that the investment will help both companies to create unique user experiences for customers and creators.

The companies are however, waiting for regulatory approval to close the investment.

‘‘The investment allows Sony and Epic to aim to broaden their collaboration across Sony’s leading portfolio of entertainment assets and technology, the Epic’s social entertainment platform and digital ecosystem to create unique experiences for consumers and creators. The closing of the investment is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals’’.

The press release stated that the 250 million will be invested in Epic Games through Sony’s wholly-owned subsidiary without naming the subsidiary. The release did not share all the details of the investment but stated that both companies will use their expertise to create unique user experiences for both companies as well as developers.

CEO of Sony Corporation, Kenichiro Yoshida said that Epic is at the forefront of game engine development with Unreal Engine. He added that Sony plans on using the investment to bring value to the industry especially on the digital entertainment landscape.

Founder and CEO of Epic, Tim Sweeney explained that both companies ‘‘share a vision of real time 3D social experiences leading to a convergence of gaming, film, and music.’’ He added that the company aims to build a more open and accessible digital system for consumers and creators.
