Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Sets The Ghana Digital Innovation Week In Motion
Nov. 23, 2021, noon
Ghana’s innovation ecosystem has continued to grow over the last decade, positioning itself as a leading frontier in digital transformation in Africa.
Because of this, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has launched the Ghana Digital Innovation Week (GDIW), a week-long programme bringing together pace-setters and stakeholders in the digitisation ecosystem. GDIW is an initiative of Make- I.T. in Africa, a program implemented by GIZ Ghana on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development
The Ghana Digital Innovation Week(Nov 22- Nov 26) has been designed to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, university faculties, venture capitalists. The initiative also seeks technical service providers such as accountants, designers, contract manufacturers and providers of skills training and professional development to provide a common platform for practical conversations on turning innovative ideas into practical reality to address societal problems.
The program is in motion with support from multi-stakeholders, including the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MoTI).
The Accra Digital Centre (ADC), the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Center of Excellence in ICT, the Ghana Chamber of Technology, Ashesi University College and the University of Ghana are onboard as private sector stakeholders.
Commending the organisers for the "excellent collaborative work done", Vice President Bawumia said it was imperative that all stakeholders "talk to each other" as the nation strives towards achieving a digital economy fit for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
"For far too long, things have been happening in a silo-like environment in the digital innovation space. All key stakeholders must be brought together in a shared space to have frank conversations and cross-fertilise each other."

"This Ghana Digital Innovation Week will serve as a platform to discuss and define a shared national vision that drives Ghana's digital innovation agenda, generates broad interest, and prompts concrete actions in the policy, legislative, regulatory spaces and the needed infrastructure."
"Furthermore, let us use the opportunity of this conversation to highlight our nation's achievements in the digital innovation ecosystem and lead the discussion on how best Ghana can position itself to drive its development agenda through inclusive and collaborative stakeholder participation in this ecosystem.
"It is only through an open, inclusive and participatory process, where the voices of all can be heard, that we can craft Ghana's digital future and unleash the true potential that innovation holds," he urged.
"To rebuild our post-pandemic economy, there is an urgent need of investing in innovative technology to leapfrog the obstacles to inclusive development. There is perhaps no more important development revolution facing us now than the fast-approaching digitisation and leveraging of technology to develop our country, Ghana."
The GDIW also forms part of trilateral cooperation between Ghana, Germany and Israel on innovation and development to promote government level awareness for digital innovation while also adding impetus to the growth of the digital innovation ecosystem in Ghana.
