Zeepay Penetrates The Ethiopian Market Through Partnership With Telebirr, A Mobile Money Service

Ghana meets Ethiopia as Zeepay partners with Telebirr, a mobile money service owned and launched by Ethiotelecom – Ethiopia's only telecommunication and Internet service provider.

The new partnership will open Africa to digital and cross-border payments and give Telebirr access to over 150 million consumers. Ethiopia has a vast population of over 2 million Ethiopians in the diaspora who invariably need to send money back home. The collaboration will allow Ethiopian diasporans to cater for friends and family back home and support their communities.

Founded in 2014, Zeepay focuses on digital rails to connect digital assets such as Mobile Money Wallets, Cards, ATMs, Bank accounts and Digital Tokens to International Money Transfer Operators, Payments, Subscriptions, International Airtime and Refugee payments.

On the other hand, Telebirr is a digital platform that allows its customers access to several financial services such as “receive international remittances”, “deposit and withdraw cash”, “send and receive money”, “buy airtime and mobile data packages” and “receive payments from customers”. Most importantly, Telebirr customers can use all the above services without a bank account, allowing the company to bridge further the gap between the banked and unbanked in yet another African country.
